OLSU 1016 QuickBooks Error Fix and QBO Import
Convert a PDF bank statement to a QuickBooks file
Drop in a PDF statement and get a QBO (Web Connect) or IIF file you can import into QuickBooks Online or Desktop.
OLSU-1016 is a QuickBooks Desktop Bank Feeds error that stops you from setting up or refreshing a bank connection. Intuit does not publish a separate meaning for it; it sits in the same OL and OLSU family as OLSU-1011 and OLSU-1013, and the causes are the same five: your bank, your internet connection, the accounts in your company file, the file format, or an unsupported QuickBooks version. If the month has to close today, convert the PDF statement to a .qbo file, import it through Web Connect, and fix the connection afterward.
The pages ranking for this code mostly copy one generic list. This guide puts the checks in the order that finds the cause fastest, shows how to tell a bank problem from a file problem in about ten minutes, and explains how to keep the books moving while the feed is broken.
What does OLSU-1016 mean in QuickBooks Desktop?
It means QuickBooks could not complete the sign-up or update step with your bank. Intuit's help article "Fix OL and OLSU Bank Feeds errors in QuickBooks Desktop" covers OLSU-1016 together with the other OLSU codes and lists the same causes for all of them: a problem with your bank (an alert waiting in online banking, a change from Direct Connect to Web Connect, an inactive account still enabled for online banking), your internet connection or firewall, damaged bank account setup in the company file, a downloaded file that is not .qbo, or a QuickBooks release Intuit no longer supports.
So the number tells you the family, not the fix. The quickest way forward is to find out which side of the connection is failing.
| What you see | Likely cause | First move |
|---|---|---|
| OLSU-1016 on one bank, other banks connect fine | That bank's service or your online banking profile | Sign in on the bank's website and clear any alerts |
| OLSU-1016 on every bank in the file | Internet, firewall or the company file | Run the test company check below |
| OLSU-1016 right after the bank changed its online banking | The bank moved you to Web Connect or a new connection | Ask the bank which connection type it now supports |
| OLSU-1016 on QuickBooks Desktop 2023 or older | Unsupported release | Import statements as IIF and plan the upgrade |
| OLSU-1016 when importing a downloaded file | The file is CSV, QFX or OFX instead of .qbo | Download or convert a .qbo file |
How do I fix error OLSU-1016 in QuickBooks?
Work the steps in this order and stop when the connection goes through. Most fixes take under fifteen minutes; the ones that involve the bank can take days.
1. Sign in to your bank's website
Log in to online banking outside QuickBooks. Accept any new terms, security notices or messages waiting for you. Intuit lists pending alerts as a cause because the bank will refuse the QuickBooks request until a person clicks through them. Some banks also require you to switch on access for financial software first. TD Bank, for example, shows QuickBooks under Financial Tool Access as Approval Pending until you authorize it.
2. Check the connection from your computer
Confirm you can open other websites, then make sure Windows Firewall or your security software is not blocking QuickBooks. If you work in a hosted or remote desktop environment, ask the host whether outbound connections from QuickBooks are allowed.
3. Run the test company check
Create a new sample company file, set up the same bank there and try to connect. If the new file connects, the problem lives in your company file, usually in the bank account's online banking setup. If the new file fails with OLSU-1016 too, the problem sits with the bank or the connection, and no amount of repair on your file will fix it.
4. Deactivate and set up the account again
When the test company works, go to the account in Chart of Accounts, open Edit Account, and on the Bank Feed Settings tab deactivate all online services. Then set up Bank Feeds again for that account. Also look for inactive accounts that still have online banking switched on; Intuit lists those as a cause.
5. Update QuickBooks and the bank list
Install the latest release update for your version. Intuit discontinued QuickBooks Desktop 2023 releases on May 31, 2026, including Web Connect and transaction downloads, so on those versions no connection fix exists.
6. Call the bank
If the test company also fails, the bank has to act. Ask specifically whether your account supports Direct Connect or Web Connect with QuickBooks Desktop, whether a separate Direct Connect PIN or enrollment is needed, and whether there is a known outage.
Is OLSU-1016 a problem with my bank or with QuickBooks?
The test company check answers this in about ten minutes. A clean new file that connects means QuickBooks and your company file are at fault; a new file that fails means the bank or the network is. Many people skip this test and spend hours repairing a company file while the real fault is a pending approval on the bank's website.
Can I still import transactions while OLSU-1016 is unresolved?
Yes. The error blocks the live connection, not file imports. QuickBooks Desktop imports Web Connect files (.qbo) through File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files, and Intuit's own article notes that QuickBooks only opens downloaded transactions in a .qbo file. You have three ways to get one:
- The bank's download page. Many banks offer a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) download for recent months. Use it first if it covers the dates you need.
- The PDF statements. When the bank only offers PDF or the download window does not reach back far enough, convert the PDF statements to a .qbo file for QuickBooks Desktop and import them month by month.
- IIF on unsupported versions. On Desktop 2023 and older, where Web Connect was switched off, import the converted statement as an IIF file instead.
Import into the same account the broken feed belongs to, oldest month first, and reconcile each month to the statement's ending balance. When the connection comes back, match or exclude any downloaded transactions that overlap the months you already imported, because a converted file and a bank download carry different transaction IDs and QuickBooks will not recognize them as the same.
OLSU-1016 compared with the codes around it
| Code | Where it usually shows up | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| OLSU-1011 | Bank Feeds setup, often company preferences or a bank-wide change | OLSU-1011 fix |
| OLSU-1013 | Authorizing or updating the connection, including bank approvals | OLSU-1013 fix |
| OLSU-1016 | Setup or update cannot complete | This page |
| OLSU-1024 | Directory or branding files for the bank, or an unsupported version | OLSU-1024 fix |
| OL-222 | A downloaded or converted file will not import | OL-222 fix |
Intuit sends all of these to the same troubleshooting article, so the order of checks above works for each. What changes is how likely the bank is to be the cause: the setup codes lean toward the bank, the import codes toward the file.
How long does it take to fix OLSU-1016?
If the cause was an alert on the bank's website or a firewall rule, it is fixed in minutes. A damaged account setup takes about half an hour to deactivate and rebuild. When the bank has to change something, such as enrolling you in Direct Connect or fixing its server, expect days and sometimes weeks, and you rarely get a date. That is the case where importing statements is worth doing instead of waiting.
What waiting costs at month-end
Typing transactions by hand runs about one to two minutes per line once you include checking. A business account with 200 transactions a month means three to six hours of entry and a real chance of a transposed figure that breaks the reconciliation. A bookkeeper with several clients on the same bank loses that time per client. Converting a PDF statement takes a couple of minutes, and the file goes in through the same Web Connect import QuickBooks already uses. Once the months are in, matching them in bank reconciliation software or in the QuickBooks Reconcile window closes the period.
Pricing is simple: Starter is $49 a month for 50 statements, Plus $149 for 200 and Pro $499 for unlimited, with yearly billing at half the monthly rate. You can convert one statement before creating an account and see every row against the balance first.
Frequently asked questions
Why does QuickBooks say OLSU-1016?
QuickBooks shows OLSU-1016 when it cannot finish setting up or updating Bank Feeds with your bank. The usual reasons are a pending alert or approval in online banking, a firewall block, a damaged account setup in the company file, or an unsupported QuickBooks release.
Does OLSU-1016 mean my bank no longer works with QuickBooks?
Not necessarily. Most cases clear after you sign in to the bank's website or rebuild the account setup. If the test company file also fails, ask the bank whether it still supports Direct Connect or Web Connect for your account type.
Can I use Web Connect instead of Direct Connect?
Yes. Web Connect is a file import, so it works even when the live connection fails. Download a .qbo file from the bank or convert the PDF statement, then use File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files.
Will fixing OLSU-1016 download my old transactions?
Only as far back as the bank allows, which is often 90 days or a few months. For older months, import converted statements, and when the feed returns, exclude any overlapping downloads so nothing posts twice.
