QuickBooks Desktop End of Life and Sunset Dates
Convert a PDF bank statement to a QuickBooks file
Drop in a PDF statement and get a QBO (Web Connect) or IIF file you can import into QuickBooks Online or Desktop.
QuickBooks Desktop as a product has no end of life date, but individual versions do. Desktop 2023 was discontinued on May 31, 2026, Desktop 2022 on May 31, 2025 and Desktop 2021 on May 31, 2024. Desktop 2024 was due to follow on May 31, 2027, until Intuit said in August 2026 that version 24.0 "won't be discontinued in May 2027" and will get continuous support instead. If your version is already past its date, bank feeds and Web Connect are off for good, and the practical choices are an upgrade, a move to QuickBooks Online, or staying put and importing statements as IIF files.
Most pages on this topic were written before the August 2026 change and still print a 2027 date for Desktop 2024. This one starts from Intuit's current position, lists what each version has lost, and then compares the routes a firm on a discontinued version can take to keep bank activity flowing into the books.
QuickBooks Desktop sunset dates by version
Intuit historically supported each Desktop release for about three years and then switched off its connected services on May 31. That pattern held through the 2023 release.
| Version | Service discontinuation | Bank feeds and Web Connect |
|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Desktop 2021 (Pro, Premier, Mac, Enterprise 21.0) | May 31, 2024 | Off |
| QuickBooks Desktop 2022 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise 22.0) | May 31, 2025 | Off |
| QuickBooks Desktop 2023 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus, Enterprise 23.0) | May 31, 2026 | Off |
| QuickBooks Desktop 2024 (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Enterprise 24.0) | No date. Intuit: "won't be discontinued in May 2027" | Working, with an active subscription |
The last row is the one that changed. Intuit's statement, as published in August 2026, reads: "We're moving away from our historical 3-year software lifecycle. Moving forward, version 24.0 will get continuous support and product maintenance." It names Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Enterprise Solutions. Treat it as Intuit's position today and not a promise for all time, and check Intuit's service discontinuation policy page for your exact edition before you plan around it.
When will QuickBooks Desktop 2024 be discontinued?
There is no announced date. QuickBooks Desktop 2024 was scheduled to lose its connected services after May 31, 2027, and Intuit withdrew that date in August 2026. Version 24.0 now receives security patches, tax compliance updates and other fixes through in-product updates for as long as Intuit keeps the policy and you keep the subscription active.
That is good news for anyone already on 2024. It does not help a firm still running 2023 or older, because those cut-offs have already happened and Intuit has not reversed them.
What happens when QuickBooks Desktop is no longer supported?
The program keeps opening and your company file stays readable, but every service that talks to Intuit or to a bank stops. For a discontinued version that means:
- Bank Feeds no longer download through Direct Connect.
- Web Connect imports of .qbo files are switched off, so even a file downloaded from the bank will not load.
- Payroll, payments and other connected add-on services end.
- No security patches or critical updates.
- No live technical support from Intuit.
The Web Connect line catches people out. Many firms assume that losing the live feed still leaves the manual .qbo import, and on a discontinued version it does not. Intuit's 2023 discontinuation notice lists Web Connect and transaction uploads among the services that ended. Users usually find out at month-end, often through an OLSU-1024 error when they try to set the feed up again.
Can I still use QuickBooks Desktop after it is discontinued?
Yes. A discontinued version still runs, and you can still enter transactions, print checks, invoice customers and run reports. What you lose is the automatic route for bank and card activity. The route that remains is IIF, a plain text import format that QuickBooks Desktop reads from File, Utilities, Import, IIF Files. It is a local file import, so it does not depend on Intuit's servers or on your version being supported.
That is why a PDF to IIF converter matters on an old version. Your bank still issues a PDF statement every month. Convert it, import the IIF, and the transactions post to the register without retyping. Our page on importing statements after QuickBooks 2023 end of life walks through the file settings.
Options after your QuickBooks Desktop version reaches end of life
There are four realistic routes. Which one fits depends on how much you rely on Desktop-only features and how soon the next close is.
| Route | Bank activity comes in by | What it costs you | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stay on the discontinued version | IIF files converted from PDF statements | A converter subscription (ours starts at $49 a month for 50 statements). No security updates from Intuit. | Firms with stable workflows, no Intuit payroll, and a company file they do not want to migrate this year |
| Move to Desktop 2024 on an existing subscription | Bank Feeds, Web Connect .qbo files | The annual subscription. Intuit stopped selling new Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions in September 2024, so this is open to existing subscribers. | Pro and Premier users whose subscription is still active |
| Buy Desktop Enterprise | Bank Feeds, Web Connect .qbo files | Enterprise pricing, the only Desktop line sold to new customers | Larger files, inventory and advanced reporting needs |
| Move to QuickBooks Online | Bank feeds, plus manual upload of QBO, CSV, or a PDF up to 350 KB | A monthly Online plan and a migration project | Teams that want browser access and can live without Desktop-only features |
None of these is wrong. The mistake is treating the decision as urgent when the real deadline is this month's close. Statements can be imported as IIF today, and the upgrade or migration can be planned for a quiet month.
Staying put with IIF
IIF posts directly to the register. There is no Bank Feeds review screen in between, so check the converted rows against the statement's ending balance before you import, and back up the company file first. Import one statement, reconcile it, then do the next. If you would rather have a second check on the match, automated bank reconciliation can compare the ledger against the statement after the import.
Upgrading within Desktop
Once you are on a supported release, the .qbo route is back. A converted statement imports through File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files and lands in Bank Feeds for review, which is safer than IIF because you approve each line. The steps are on our PDF bank statement to QuickBooks Desktop page, and Enterprise users have their own notes on Enterprise bank feeds.
Moving to QuickBooks Online
Online reads a .qbo file from Transactions, Bank transactions, Upload from file, and it accepts a PDF statement only up to 350 KB, in English. Multi-page and scanned statements are usually larger than that, so catch-up months still go through a converter. If you are weighing the move, our page on converting QuickBooks Desktop to Online covers what to do with bank history that never made it into the Desktop file.
Do bank feeds work on a discontinued QuickBooks Desktop version?
No. Once a version passes its discontinuation date, Direct Connect downloads and Web Connect imports both stop and they do not come back. Reinstalling, rebuilding the file or calling the bank will not restore them, because the block is on Intuit's side. Our guide to QuickBooks Desktop bank feeds explains the three connection methods and what each one needs.
Before you troubleshoot anything, open Help, then About QuickBooks, and read the version year. If it says 2023 or earlier, skip the error-code articles. The fix is one of the four routes above.
What a missed month costs compared with a converter
A business checking statement with 150 lines takes roughly two hours to key by hand at a careful pace, and a card statement with 80 lines about another hour. Three accounts across three months is around 25 hours of typing. At a bookkeeper's rate of $50 an hour that is $1,250, before the corrections that hand entry always needs.
The same nine statements fit inside the Starter plan at $49 for the month. Each conversion takes a few minutes including the balance check, and you can try one statement before creating an account. Firms handling several clients on old Desktop versions usually sit on the Plus plan at $149 for 200 statements. Current plans are on the pricing page.
Questions people ask about QuickBooks Desktop end of life
Is QuickBooks Desktop being discontinued?
Not as a whole. Intuit discontinues individual versions, and it stopped selling new Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions in September 2024. Existing subscribers can renew, Enterprise is still sold to new customers, and Intuit says Desktop 2024 will get continuous support with no end date announced.
Can I still buy QuickBooks Desktop?
New customers can buy QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus have been closed to new subscriptions since September 2024, though existing subscribers can keep renewing. Check Intuit's current offer before you budget, because the terms have changed more than once.
Is QuickBooks Desktop 2023 still supported?
No. QuickBooks Desktop 2023, including Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Mac Plus and Enterprise 23.0, was discontinued on May 31, 2026. The software opens and reports run, but bank feeds, Web Connect imports, payroll and support have ended. Statements can still be imported as IIF files.
Do I have to move to QuickBooks Online?
No. Intuit promotes Online, but nothing forces the move. A discontinued Desktop version keeps running, Desktop 2024 has ongoing support, and Enterprise remains on sale. If the only thing you miss is bank data, uploading bank statements to QuickBooks Desktop through IIF closes that gap without a migration.
Will my QuickBooks Desktop company file stop opening?
No. Discontinuation ends connected services, not access to your data. Keep a current backup, and keep the installer and license details somewhere safe, because Intuit removes downloads for discontinued versions and a failed computer is the real risk to an old installation.
